I don’t write much about men’s style, but my first London Fashion Week event was a menswear event and, since British men are generally impeccable dressers, I got some good advice for Washington men and their infamous ill-fitting suits.
On Friday, September 17, I visited the Covent Garden neighborhood to attend a casual cocktail party at the Trousers London store. Trousers London is a men’s denim and streetwear brand. The store also hosted the latest collection of the brand Social Suicide, which included deconstructed jackets and cool mesh-lined ties.
I liked the Trousers London jeans–the denim was high quality and the gray and blue were interesting without being feminine.
I also admired the Social Suicide details, like mesh lining on the ties and silk polka dot linings on the blazers. I’m not sure about the target client–the colorful canvas ties would work well in Washington, but I am not sure how a man would wear a denim blazer.
Nonetheless, a tag on a blazer had some great dressing advice for men:
If it feels tight across the chest and through the armholes, remember this:
1. Look in the mirror – you look good. A high armhole lengthens the body and enhances the chest.
2. Stand up straight – we all slouch a little. You’ll find it eases the pressure and you’ll look a little better.
3. The armpit is like a steam iron – hot, moist, pressure. After a little time, the hole will open up. If it’s tight now, it won’t be baggy later. Trust us.
There you have it, boys. Now, go tailor your suits!
P.S. I attended some other events yesterday, including Jayne Pierson’s runway show, but more on that later because I’m off to interview Lee Klabin and see her collection for my Weekly Standard story!
