Finally, the moment fashionistas had been waiting for–the revealing of Michelle Obama’s inaugural gown.
She chose a long, white, one-strap gown embellished with Swarovski crystals designed by Jason Wu. Wu, a 26-year-old designer based in New York, was a finalist in the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund contest for up-and-coming designers, and he’s sure to be propelled to stardom now.
The gown is certainly beautiful and by no means is this choice a Fashion Don’t. Ivory is a color we haven’t seen on Michelle Obama, and she looks lovely. However, the gown seems more appropriate as a wedding dress for a woman in her 20s or early 30s. And I would have liked to see her in a brighter, less poufy dress. Still, this choice shows that Michelle Obama is not afraid to take fashion risks and try young, less well-known designers, which is a good thing for the fashion industry.
Now it will be completely impossible to get a seat at Jason Wu’s show in February…
